Originally, an electric railroad from Rockport to Mount Vernon and Anacortes (WA). Did well enough, it found another route through the Cascade Mountains to Eastern WA via Lake Chelan paralleling the GN and Milwaukee Road. The route is much more scenic and both GN and CP use trackage rights for scenic excursions.. Plus, it's cheap! The CN uses power generated by its dam(n) at Heaven's Gate to use its "Electric Fleet" to traverse the mountains. The big roads are delighted to exchange power at either end, or use their own electrics at cost. They also have equity positions, and thus provide services beyond the reach of a modest but solid railroad. If only... |
