Sierra Northern

The railroad is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains in northern California north of Interstate 80. The line runs from a junction with the Southern Pacific at Boca north to Susanville (60 miles)crossing over the Western Pacific east of Portola. Interchange with the WP occurs at the town of Loyalton. Interchange with SP is at Susanville, Boca and at Westwood Jct.

The Sierra Northern is closely tied to the timber and lumber industry and hauls finished lumber, wood chips and particle board from on-line industries to interchange. It brings in supplies for these industries as well as supplies for the small towns in the area. The SN is an all Alco powered railroad with a fleet of 12 road diesels and a couple of switchers.
