Great Central & Western RR - Great Lakes District
Started in 1910 as a Grange carrier in Illinois, the GCW was taken over in the 1960’s by Burlington and later swallowed up as part of BN and then BNSF. Currently it interchanges with railroads in the Great lakes region including DMIR, GT, DTI, AA, DTSL, CSX, UP/CNW, CN, plus transients from the East Coast via the DH.
There are many types of movements including commuter trains and Amtrak, iron ore runs thru the DMIR and LSI, Powder River thru coal runs, lots of rail fan steam specials, maintenance of way operations, and much more.
The GCW is a double track DC ONLY block layout measuring 8’ x 22’ with 24” to 36 “radius curves. I t has a separate added layout with a Great Lakes freighter and two Hulett Unloaders and three hopper tracks. There is also a separate Gantry Crane for loading hoppers with aggregates from the Hulett dock. There are also industrial sidings, an engine maintenance and refueling facility, commuter passenger station servicing both tracks, and the Division Headquarters with its own car track for management inspection trains and specials.
