The design of this model railroad was inspired by the ATSF Houston Sub CLIC book. Even so, this model RR does not pretend to be prototypical, strictly speaking. I.e. modeler's license was applied liberally.
The focus is way freight switching. The model RR has five switching areas based on Zones 15, 18 (east and west), and 19 (east and west). It has three fiddle tracks, two leading to Zone 15 and Zone 18, and one to Zone 19. There is basically no mainline running, just access from the fiddle tracks to the industrial switching areas. Staging is in 60 unused pizza boxes stored on shelves under Zone 15. Each train varies from none to as many as 9 cars, plus one engine and caboose, but generally run 5 to 9 cars. Each area has a switcher loco, because nowhere will you find a runaround track! But with the road loco and switcher, you can service facing point spurs. |
