Howe Truss Bridge
Very Strong Bridge!
The Howe Truss Bridge first designed and built in 1840 by William Howe, was the first successful truss construction of both wood and metal. The new design of this bridge helped to span greater distances and sped the development of the railroad. It soon became the most common type of timber bridge and has given the bridge users of America over 100 years of continuous service. This bridge features all-wood construction with many parts pre-cut to size. The tensions rods used in this kit are made of steel piano wire. This model follows basic prototype engineering practice in that the side trusses carry the load. A test model carried a load of 20 pounds concentrated in the center of the span, with only a 1/32 inch downward deflection, and no damage. This is many times the load your model will have to bear when even the largest locomotives crosses the bridge. These are very strong structures.
