Essentially an ALCO RS-2 on six axles, the 1,500-horsepower RSC-2, powered by ALCO 244 series engines, was designed for branches and other lines with light rail. Per-axle weight was reduced by spreading the load across the six axles and, like their four-axled brethren, they were equally capable of working freight and passenger runs. On some roads RSC-2 units were eventually converted to RS-2s by adding two-axle trucks once the rails on their lines was upgraded or abandoned. Their distinctive trucks and the scenic routes they ran have made them popular with railfans and modelers.
