In order to improve visibility over freight cars on the deck of a carfloat, the Railroad Tug was built with a taller pilot house.

Starting in the 1920s, many railroads began modernizing their fleets with diesel-electric tugs.

Not only did they use similar technology to the then-new diesel locomotives, many were painted in the same colorful schemes.

These newer tugs remained in service for years, with a few serving new owners yet today.
